The Festival of 2013

The theme for this year's festival is "Freedom", which is reflected in the choice of jury where, among other things, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is present but is not present in Stockholm, due to a travel ban from the Chinese regime. He creates the artwork "The Chair of Nonattendance" which is sent to Stockholm; an empty chair that is impossible to sit in.

The winner of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award is the French director Claire Denis and the Stockholm Visionary Award goes to the British Peter Greenaway. For the second year in a row, the jury selects a female director as the Bronze horse winner in »The Selfish Giant« by Clio Barnard.

Ryan Coogler's acclaimed debut film »Last Stop Fruitvale Station« is shown during the festival and a young Coogler visits Stockholm. In 2018, Coogler will direct the Oscar-winning superhero film »Black Panther«, which will take both critics and audiences by storm. For the second year in a row, the jury selects a female director as the Bronze horse winner.

THE FESTIVAL TAKES A STAND
The film festival is rarely afraid to make political decisions. When the Persian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who will also visit Stockholm in 2013, has his passport revoked and cannot leave Iran, the festival and a large number of guest directors show their anger over this. A demonstration is being held outside the Iranian embassy in Stockholm.

MOVIES WITHOUT BORDERS
Stockholm Film Festival runs the heart project 'Film without borders' with the goal of inspiring young people around the world to make films. In 2013, the Stockholm Film Festival arranged film workshops for children and young people in Namibia together with local educators.
