The devil knows there way too few films on seabound slackers. So thank your lucky star for Dana Brown and his family traditions. Everyone knows that surfing equals mellow dudes with sandy hair on the edge of freedom, smoking loads of illegal plants and never spending too many hours on learning a French verb. And this is the final proof of an assumption come true, although at the same time being put in the trash. For in Step into Liquid, it’s not just the lazy beach hang-arounds who are being portrayed, but whole families, as well as weird veterans returning to Vietnam – all sharing the same fever. Brown takes his camera and explores the world of surfing, and although he represents the climate of total unpretentiousness, the clucking of waves and romantic pictures of storms being tamed are close to poetic. The depictions of the collection of heroes within the surf industry is also very impressive, as you get to follow surfers in both the “classic” surfing areas and on, for instance, Ireland. This is truly a work of love which makes you dream of crashing through waves wishing you had been born far from a cold and factory-smogged city.KASPER SPERBER
