When a sacred Buddhist statue called Ong-Bak is stolen from the peaceful village Nong Pradu by Bangkok hooligans the harmless but lethal temple boy and Muay Thai warrior Ting is assigned to bring it back. His mission turns out to be long and hard. Muay Thai, an ancient Thai martial art which has probably caused more bone fractures than any other Asian fighting technique, is the main subject of this movie. Thai native director Prachya Pinkaew, highly reputed for his commercials and music videos, serves a mix of Good versus Evil, poor versus rich and rural versus city life. The ingredients may seem mundane, but this movie is an exotic action experience delivered straight in your face. Main character Ting is played by Tony Jaa, Thailand's new action hero and martial art icon, from now on definitely competing with the great ones of the genres - Jackie Chan and Jet Li better watch out. Ong-Bak is the highest grossing picture in Thailand so far this year, and recently Luc Besson's company Europa Corp. aquired the world wide rights for the film. DANIEL ILIC
