It is the last screening before the fi nal closure of an old movie theatre, and a few odd characters are present for the wake. The young projectionist, the beautiful crippled ticket clerk and the lonely spectators. Strangers in life but briefl y connected to each other by the mutual experience of watching the fi lm. Critically acclaimed director Tsai Ming-liang presents a poetic look at a way of cinema-going that is coming to an end all over the world as old cinemas decline in popular- ity in favor of multiplex theatres, Internet and DVD. This memorable and nostalgic fi lm, awarded by the FIPRESCI-jury and nominated for a Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival, lets the theatre itself, its construction and ambi- ance, play the leading part. Slow, almost meditative scenes come together to a poetic realism that almost reaches surrealistic levels. The title refers to the fi lm within the fi lm – screened in the theater is Dragon Inn, a classic martial-arts movie from 1966 in which actor Miao Tien started his career, evoking a lost but not forgotten cinematic era.
