Twelve years ago, Nick Broomfield met Aileen Wuornos, a serial-killer on death-row in Florida who has convicted of seven murders. The meeting resulted in the documentary Aileen Wuornos- the Selling of a Serial Killer and, since then, Aileen and Nick Broomfield have kept in touch. They met again last year when Broomfield was served with a subpoena to appear at Aileen’s final state appeal before execution. Extracts from his documentary were shown in court – for example, showing her lawyer sucking on a joint before giving her legal advice. During the hearings, Aileen suddenly changes her plea from not guilty to stating that she killed the seven men in cold blood. In interviews with Broomfield, she also claims that she being controlled by radio waves. He starts to worry about her sanity and starts filming again.Nick Broomfield uses his trademark kamikaze-style of interviewing, never avoiding the uncomfortable questions, never shutting the camera off. The life story that unfolds before his camera is unbelievably tragic and captivating. The film not only depicts the harsh childhood of Aileen Wuornos, it is also a powerful statement against the death penalty and, furthermore, raises disturbing questions about executing the mentally insane.IKA JOHANNESSON
