The pouring rain has made the river flood and a group of travelers become trapped in a country inn. The rain doesn't seem to stop and a samurai, Ihei, takes part in fencing fights to raise money so that they can arrange a party to keep their spirits up during the flood. Ihei outshines the other fighters, but to take part in such fights is far beneath a samurai's dignity. One day, after interfering in a duel between two young samurais, he is offered by their master, Shigeaki, the position as master fencer. Ihei accepts the offer, but while showing his knowledge he accidentally pushes Shigeaki down in a pond. Shigeaki also finds about Ihei's prize fighting and Ihei and his wife Tayo are driven away. The story takes place at the beginning of the 18th century, a time characterised by simplicity in Japan. Ihei's skill as a samurai has no equivalent in his capability to handle people. When the Rain Lifts is based on Shugoro Yamamoto's short story and the script was written by Akira Kurosawa. Kurosawa was planning to direct this film but died before the production could start. Takashi Koizumi, Akira Kurosawa's nearest assistant for 28 years, chose to continue the production following Kurosawa's notes.
