Gordon is a 25-year-old unemployed bachelor and also a chain-smoking asthmatic. He lives alone in a boardinghouse with a bunch of not-too-charming elderly singles. One day the stubborn Cynthia storms into his life. Cynthia has her own problems: she suffers from an incurable rash and is besides that mad about Scribble and sex. Love buds against all odds. Cynthia moves in with Gordon but their twosome life is soon spiced by desire, jealousy and infidelity. Unwanted pregnancy and a pair of collapsed lungs are some consequences of the odd couple's energetic love lessons. Praise is based on the bestselling and partly autobiographical book with the same name written by the Australian Andrew MaGahan. His filmscript spans between drastic humour and bitter-sweet romance. John Curran has directed the laconic love story with great feeling of form, tempo, and details. The delightfully slow shooting has a frugal, subtle dialogue free from smart irony. The white-trash feeling is strong and there are several screwed minor characters. The main parts are played by two debutants, one of them Peter Fenton who is otherwise known as the charasmatic singer in the Australian group Crow. Here he is congenial as the expressionless and irresolute Gordon with his lanky body and big, wild hair. Extra praise for the extremely credible asthmatique fits.
