Zubeidaa is the latest, national award winning film by Shyam Benegal, the grandfather of India's ''parallel cinema''. Popular Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor plays the lead, and the film contains lavish sets and costumes, as well as lively songs and dances. Zubeidaa focuses on an attractive young divorcee and mother (Zubeidaa), who agrees to marry an Indian monarch on the condition that she'll leave her baby behind with her family. The monarch is already married to another woman, and Zubeidaa's frantic efforts to compete for his affection end in tragedy.
The film is told from the viewpoint of the abandoned son, trying to piece together a picture of his mother from fragments of memory - his own and others'. It is a Rashomon of sorts, as each one's version tinctures memory with desire. Zubeidaa is a mainstream film that is winning cross-over (both NRI and Caucasian) audiences in the West.
