A man leaves a snow-covered town in Iran to look for work abroad. Left behind is his wife Khatoun, a factory seamstress, together with their daughter. Months pass and spring comes with no sign of life from Khatoun’s husband. When the young mechanic Marhab arrives to town, she falls in love and the couple gets married. But family bliss doesn’t last long when Marhab is unable to keep his job, and also starts dreaming of a better life in another country. The internationally acclaimed director Rafi Pitts depicts a new Iranian generation dreaming of better opportunities abroad. The scenes evolve in the streets, in garages, on construction sites and the desolation is emphasized by strong images. Pitt’s use of non-actors gives the film a neo-realism touch. It’s Winter is a love story that reveals a rarely seen side of Iranian working class, where the struggle for survival puts a hard strain on love, friendship and family ties. It combines personal drama with social criticism, without moralizing or providing simple answers.MALIN EIJDE
