Your Friends and Neighbours tel Is of a couple of people, three women and three men, in their forties. The three men are old friends and meet to exercise, take a sauna and drink beer together and at the same time they take the opportunity to talk about women, relationships and sex. One of the men is seeing one of the friends' wife behind his back at a hotelroom.
His own wife initiates a relationship with another woman, and the third man, who is single, turns outto be a minor psychopath.
The film depicts these people's relationships and sexlife, which through and through can be described as very problematic and fairly unsuccessful. You can notice a similarityto Woody Allen. The women are not particularly interested in what the men have to say, and everything theys say bores them. They seek new, more exciting adventures. One of them do that by being unfaithful with her husband's friend and the other by bei ng with a woman, but they both soon realize that even these people are totally uninterestingto them.
The characters of the film are essentially lonely and the distances between them are tangible. They all suffer from the lack of communication which exists between them. They appear to be coldhearted and
there seems to be a lack of real love.
The characteristic of the style is one of simplicity and everydayness, but the film also contains some slightly absurd touches. The scenes create a distance between
the people by avoiding to show several characters in one frame and through that it can be said that it shows the inner loneliness of the characters. We never find out the name of the characters, who they really are or where the setting takes place. They could probably be just about anyone, for example your friends or neighbours.
