In the most quiet, American small town the single, God-fearing Sammy brings up her eight year-old son Rudy. Her everyday life is turned upside down when her wi ld brother Terry returns from an unsuccessful trip to New York in search of money. Only tied by the early deaths of their parents, a long-standing disagreement between Sammy and Terry from their adolescence soon becomes apparent. Unconstrained and not dodging conflict, Terry takes the paternal role upon himself complete with visits to the billiard hall, fishing and settling the score with Rudy's violent caravan living father. A character study with great sensitivity of psychological problems of the brother-sister relationship and family responsibility marks Lonergan's directing debut. You Can Count on Me, produced by Martin Scorcese, was awarded the big jury prize at the Sundance Festival.
