NJ Jian and his family live a seemingly comfortable middle class life. However its instability is revealed in the opening scene when the second son, A-Di, is about to get married but an ex-girlfriend shows up and spoils his wedding party. His grandmother leaves the party very upset and then suffers a heart attack when she arrives home. This is the beginning of the family's falling apart.Edward Yang combines the logical precision of a lyrical poem with epic lines. As he did in Taipei Story and A Brighter Summer Day he depicts contrasts in contemporary Taiwan, but existential questions are driven to extremes in A One and a Two and the film also conveys more hopefulness.
