Lee Yoon Ki´s first feature film as a director is a subdued character study of inner life.Jeong-hae, a young woman working at a post office, lives her life by strict routine. She is almost mute, eats at the same restaurant every day and does not experience much outside of her job. Jeong-hae’s appearance shows nothing of the inner conflicts that are troubling her and why she has a hard time connecting to her surroundings. Gradually, through glimpses from a tragic past, we are let into Jeong-hae’s world. Lee’s quiet film with sparse dialogue should appeal to viewers who favours ambiguity over ready-made answers and a slow pace with time to think. This Charming Girl is a multiple award winner at film festivals around the globe. This year it won the Netpac Award for best Asian film at Berlin International Film Festival and got nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival. ROLAND MADARÁSZ
