Xiu xiu

Xiu xiu

av Joan Chen

Xiu Xiu is a young Chinese girl, who is sent away with a Tibetan shepherd, Lao Jin, to learn how to take care of horses. The year is 1975 and the Cultural Revolution is in its last phases. Xi u Xi u is part of the last ''intellectual youth'' who are sent away from their parents and friends. When she realizes that she will not be brought back, she tries to get written permission to return. She offers sexual favors to party functionaries and other men with influence, but is only taken advantage of. Lao Jin loves her and finally frees her, in a dramatic way, from her unendurable situation.
Xiu Xiu is based on a novel by the awardwinning Chinese writer Yan Geiling, who also assisted in the script-writing. The cinematography follows the shifting colours of the days and the seasons in a poetic way. The landscape, by the borders between Sichuan and Tibet, are beautiful. In this environment, people seem small compared to ''the universe''. It is however between and within the characters that the real drama takes place. The love between the young girl and the shepherd, and the girl's change from being naive and trusting to disillusioned.
Xiu Xiu is a melancholy story about suffering and martyrdom. Joan Chen says that she was inspired by an old, Tibetan tale during the filming. The tale is that of a young girl who is chosen to be a sacrifice and is later killed by her tribe.
