Made in Hong Kong

Made in Hong Kong

av Fruit Chan

Made in Hong Kong is about three teenagers and their relationship to each other in a world where all fixed points of reference have vanished and every hope of being able to face the uncertain future has gone. All that is left for them to do is to start some kind of rebellion against the adult world, which is responsible for all the hopelessness.
Autumn Moon's source of income is shady. When forcing one of his ''clients'' to pay up, he meets Ping, and falls in love. She is, however, very ill and needs a new kidney. Both of them come from broken homes. Moon is also good friends with a backward boy, Sylvester, and defends him from the violent attacks of other school kids. When a young school girl commits suicide, she leaves behind two letters written in her own blood. Moon becomes obsessed by her, and decides to search out those to whom the letters were directed. He also wants to raise the money necessary to save Ping. He steals money from his family, and is driven away. He broods on his revenge.
According to the director, the film is inspired by China's takeover of Hong Kong. As with many of Chan's generation, this event marks the end of history. Moon puts forward an interesting subjective theory about the reasons behind the break-up of the family and the absence of strong family ties: many men in Hong Kong have mistresses they have to support on the mainland, just as in the film.
The sexual frustration in the film is palpable. Moon longs for Ping's body, but she is awaiting death and says that he may not kiss her until after she is dead.
Moon has to wash his underwear every morning because of the wet dreams he has about the dead girl, Susan. Just in case, he keeps his clean and dry undies in the fridge, just like in an old jeans commercial.
Moon is cool and slick. He moves like a model on a catwalk, with a sexual charisma like a thinner Brad Pitt. It is not surprising that the lovely and fragile Ping is drawn to someone like Autumn Moon. Sylvester, the backward one of the three musketeers, always manages to get a nosebleed when he gets sexually excited. Just one whiff of Ping is enough for his nose to start dripping
