Wassup Rockers

Wassup Rockers

av Larry Clark

A group of Hispanic teenage skaters from South Central LA, provoke their neighbourhood by wearing tight jeans and playing punk music instead of hip hop. When the rockers go to Beverly Hills to skate the legendary stairs of Beverly Hills High School, they get into trouble with the police, as well as with the jealous boyfriends of a couple of local girls, and have to escape through a maze of backyards. Known for dealing with issues such as teenage sex, violence, and drug abuse, photographer and filmmaker Larry Clark once again explores the lives of a group of teenagers in urban America in his sixth film. While not as dark and provocative as his previous films, among them Kids and Bronze Horse-winner Bully, Wassup Rockers also has its share of controversy and social criticism. It starts off with the feel of a documentary, observing the sweet and charming skaters, all using their real names, who refuse to adapt to the hip hop culture of their neighbourhood. Wassup Rockers then alters into an action adventure when the kids arrive in Beverly Hills. All to a pounding Latino punk soundtrack. KRISTIN DJERF
