Wild at Heart

Wild at Heart

av David Lynch

As Sailor gets out of jail, he runs off with lover Lula, despite her mother ragging against the two of them being together. On the highways of a desert landscape, the hunt begins. Pursued by both hitmen and a private detective, the couple comes to terms with history’s dark secrets. Will they be able to ride out the storm?
To this day, David Lynch’s 1990 tale Wild Heart stands out as the coolest rock’n’roll fable ever made. It penetrates the dark world of road trip-frenziness and rides upon clichés as if sung by Iggy Pop. “When did you start to smoke?” “I guess I was about…four.”
Nicholas Cage really reached a level of brilliance in the role as Sailor Ripley, the ex-mob chauffeur, the jailbird and mellowed, crazy rebel, the man-slaughtering chain-smoker with taste for peach, cruising for kicks. How can you not love him?
This is not the weirdest Lynch-piece in the book, but perhaps the rawest one, where every sequence paints a threat of some kind. It’s restless and anxious, cruel to the bone, with no strings attached. But no review in the world would ever do it right. This is not the kind of thing you want to analyze, it’s the way you wish to live, at least if you’re somewhat familiar to its title.
