A man has served his prison sentence and arrives in the International Hotel in Macau. He no longer has any influence within the Triad and he might not even want that. Instead the hotel proprietress persuades him to regain what he has lost. Johnnie To has now left gangster violence for a small still voiced drama about the difficulties to evade one's destiny in a Macau - reminding of a lost Hong Kong. Johnnie To once again shows his ability to direct actors, Lau Ching-wan gives a convincing performance, Lam Suet is exceptionally unpleasant as the corrupt policeman and Ruby Wong plays her hotel proprietress with stringency. Cheng Siu Keung's pictures are as always well designed and Cacine Wong's music is, as in most To's films, effective in creating an atmosphere and working as a dramaturgical element.
