Homoeroticism mixes with colorful Asian aesthetics in the South Korean blockbuster The King and The Clown, set in the Chosun Dynasty. The clowns Jang-Seng and Gong-Gil perform street plays to ease their poverty-stricken lives, dreaming of reaping riches from their talent. After putting up a satirical play about the king, they are arrested and brought to the Royal Castle for trial. In order to escape the death penalty, the clowns must make the king laugh. Luckily their ruler is pleased and they are made official court jesters. A dream seems to have come true at first, yet as the king starts courting Gong-Gil, who is excellent at portraying women in his roles, a dangerous drama builds between the king, queen and jesters as the scandal brews. Selling 12 million tickets in the span of seven weeks The King and The Clown has been dubbed the Asian Brokeback Mountain. It has gorgeous sets, beautiful costumes in a myriad of colors and a soundtrack that fits perfectly.DEVI BRUNSON
