Vinyl

Vinyl

av Andy Warhol

Vinyl was an experiment that I believe was suggested to Andy by Gerard Malanga, a young poet who was employed by Andy to push the paint through the silkscreens onto the canvas and then clean up the mess afterwards. He had read A Clockwork Orange and thought that he could play a kind of juvenile delinquent similar to those in that novel.
He would assemble some friends who might also appear dissolute and they would recreate an aura of extreme decadence in the world of S and M, After the first few minutes everyone run out of any dialouge to contribute and so they spent most of the 70 minutes (two reels) seductively gyrating to the music of the Kinks.
It is a curious experiment, because it mildly attemtps to be dramatic, lacks almost any real dialouge, is totally dependent of the music to sustain interest and lacks any intentional humour. It was at a screening of this together with Beauty #2 that Gerard introduced me to Andy and he asked me to come and help him make any further experiments. Some short humorous films of mine were screened this night and Andy seemed very impressed that they were in focus and had attractive young people in them.
In retrospect I think that if Andy had met any other filmmaker that night, he and not I would have stepped into the job of devising experiments for any of this future productions.
