Last time the Romanian director Radu Mihaileanu made a feature it was the comedy Train of life (1998) about a small Jewish village in Eastern Europe during World War II. With his new award winning film ”Live and become” he moves further south, to Ethiopia, and the Jewish inhabitants there – the Falashas. Suffering from famine, thirst and exhaustion in their homeland, 8 000 Jews were transported to Jerusalem via Sudan through a vast program, ”Operation Moses”, undertaken in 1984 by the Israeli with US aid. During the long and troublesome journey families were split up and many children finally reached the holy land as orphans. That is also the situation for the main character Solomon. After a sudden and dramatic farewell of to his mother he ends up all alone in a new country, with a new family, a new language and a completely new lifestyle. Through teenage angst, love problems and identity seeking the viewer gets a nuanced glimpse of all the trouble and suspicion a black boy meets in the Jewish society. With the documentary pictures and the panoramas over the refugee camp in the Sudanese desert, ”Live and become” shows a epic picture from a corner of the world seldom seen on the screen.KERSTIN ABRAHAMSSON
