This one is the reason why the Coen brothers think they can get away with incoherent storylines - and succeed in doing so. No one really gets any wiser as the plot thickens, but who cares? The Big Sleep is more fun than most movies made before or after. There's atmosphere, there are characters and there's deadly smooth dialogue for a dozen pulp fiction's or more. The storyline involves a colonel in a greenhouse, his two daughters, blackmail, eight (we think) murders, nymphomania, pornography, drugs and femmes fatales. Incidently, of all the great ladies of the era (Lake, Scott, Greer, Stanwyck and even Gardner and Hayworth), Bacall may very well be the best In the race. Why? Mainly because she combined genuine toughness with genuine friendliness; the two true ingredients of genuine cool.
