She soon finds herself a new role, as the baby sitter for young mother Monica's son. The friendship between the women intensify and Monica encourages Mildred to start listeningto her own needs. Mildred gets new experiences that she thought she was too old for.
Comments from Gena Rowlands: ''What fascinated me about Mildred was that she wasn't the best mother who ever lived,
but she tried, she really tried. She ended up with the most spoiled son and the most unhappy daughter, but she really tried. What's the sayi ng? Genes deal the cards and environment plays the hand. You don't know where your influence starts and stops. I think Mildred loved too much, which made it hard for her when shewas no longer needed.''
''On the set, if you're working with a member of your fam i Iy, you have to be very careful that the other people don't feel excluded. I learned that very early on working with John, and I think 'we pulled it off. We acted just as an actor and a director. When we were on Gloria, of course John and I had been married many years by then, a young production assistant on the last day of shooting found out we were married. She was so surprised. And I thought, 'We did all right'. So Nick and I try to work that way, too.''
