Ferenzy and his theatre company arrive on an early summer evening to rehearse for the gala premiere at an international theatre festival. He meets Helena again. After a marriage that lasted fifteen years, he left her to move to Europe. Helena still lives is Ferenzy's house. During the hours of the night, the two artists try to bring their unresolved relationship to an end. Unfinished Business is Viveca Lindfors' directing debut.
Comment:
People often ask me which one of my films I have done do I like the best, I answer a bit sad, -l have never really done a great film .. Those I like best have been done by young, often first time filmmakers ... One of them actaully by me, Unfinished Business ... My first film as a director ... (very young) ... It sounds arrogant, but I do really like the film ..
What do I like about it?.. That it is about older people, sensual and attractive, we barely see that - two artists trying to finish their unfinished business, about accepting each other's journeys, together or apart, for better and for worse and finally to take responsability for oneself and one's talent. .. I like that it is a very personal film ...
Six years ago I applied to The Women Directing Workshop at The American Film Institute ... I was afraid they would think I was too old -I was sixty ... They never asked me my age ... First I went into panic ... I now had to write the script... What script?. I had several in mind ...
My marriage had broken up a year or so before ... Nothing was ever talked out bet-
ween me and Tabori ... Nothing ever explained ... I endlessly tried to figure it out all on my own ... Doing a film about it - about us - seemed ideal ... I could say things to him I had wanted to say and never did ... I could imagine his answers ... Yes, it's autobiographical and fiction ... What else do I know but my own life ... Strindberg said ...
I started to write the script in New York ..
Beginning of the new year. .. Finally by June it was done ... And I was on my way to California ... The deal was simple ... They gave you S 160 000 and camera equipment (video), lights, et cetera for ten days .. Somehow magically it all came together and the day we started to shoot I was cool as a cucumber ... I knew exactly what I wanted ... My crew was supportive, I had a terrific Director of Photography and a wonderful cast. .. In the last moment I had lost my leading lady to a TV series ... There was no time to serch for an other actress ... I jumped in myself ... After alii knew the part pretty well..
I like my film ... Maybe not technically perfect... My next film will have to be done on 16 mm or 35 mm ... It's never too late ..
