Two young boys, Chris and Tim, live with their father on a pig farm in the most forgotten outback of the American South. After the death of their mother they are allowed little contact with the outside world. The arrival of the siblings' uncle, Deel, a sadistic and manipulative ex-con, deeply shakes the small foundation still intact in the disturbed and farfrom-nuclear family.
Deel's jealousy and greed inevitably spiral toward a tragedy, after which the two young brothers find themselves on a life-or-death run through a rough rural landscape. Surviving on bits and pieces, something is bound to catch up
with them sooner or later, if not Deel, Tim's increasingly poor health condition.
The influence of Terrence Malick is evident in more than one respect in the films of David Gordon Green. In his first feature, the fantastic George Washington, the locations and the poetic storytelling were reminiscent of Malick. The resemblance is still here, only a tad subtler, in this beautifully shot dramatic thriller. Jamie Bell, from Billy Elliot-fame, is convincing as the older, troubled brother in this film which clearly reminds Charles Laughton's dark and expressionistic classic Night of the Hunter.
