When Iris' mother dies suddenly of cancer, she gets the idea that her sister Rose was always her mother's favourite. Unable to mourn, Iris embarks on a destructive sexual odyssey.
”Under the Skin” is a dynamic and captivating drama about family relationships and psychology, with a focus on women. Carine Adler was inspired to make the film while she was working on ”Fever”, which deals with a woman's unhealthy relationship to her mother. Adler wanted to make a feature film that showed a real female experience, a complex, and multifaceted character. In order to develop Iris' character, she called on the help of a psychologist.
The British newspaper The Guardian describes ”Under the Skin” as a variation on ”Breaking the Waves.” The latter was, however, a mans fantasy about female martyrdom, while Adler's film shows a completely different picture of sexuality, both more extreme and severe than one is used to in a British film.
We meet several exciting new actors in this debut film. Samantha Morton does a wonderful film debut as Iris. Claire Rushbrook plays the sister Rose, and has previously appeared in ”Secrets and Lies.”
