Uncut

The film is a mixture between a documentary of the liberal Canadian politician Pierre Trudeau, a discussion of the copyright laws' limiting effects on artistic creativity, an introduction to the history of circumcision, and a modern interpretation
of Bizets Carmen. Also attached to this,
as a connecting link, is the story of three gay mens' search for contact and attempt to create a meaningful existence in a society where they don't fit in.
John Greyson has ever since his early films like The Making of ''Monsters'' explored the boundaries between fact
and fiction. He continues with this in Uncut, where he goes so far so that the scene with the very ill Trudeau erases this boundary and he lets fact and fiction meet and melt into one. In this he shows clear influences from the late Chris Marker,
just as the film visually has strong signs
of inspiration from Peter Greenaway.
But the film is much more serious than the playful formal experiments suggest. It touches just as much on current and difficult social problems, as on copyright (when do you create something new, and where is the borderline between theft and inspiration?), picture manipulation (can the protection of someone's identity
in the past become a falsification of history?) and so on. Greyson also illuminates, in a satirical way, the problems of the conformist society, and this with extra intensity when he himself is engagaged
in and has written books about so called queer theory, which scrutinizes and questions the heterosexual norms of society.
With widely various means the film therefore reflects a deeply set mistrust against the creation of norms, and borderlines which are drawn too deeply between what is permitted and what is not, whether it comes down to people, art or sexual ity.
