After September 11th, the day New York's financial centre was attacked, decisions were taken that would lead to the American invasion of Iraq during the spring of 2003. In this politically challenging documentary, director Robert Greenwald interviews key people within the US government - senior advisers, high ranking politicians and government officials. With their testimonies Greenwald offers an ''unofficial'' view as to the reason of the invasion, where inconsistencies in the official pro-war arguments are evident, especially the overstatement of Iraq's program for weapons of mass destruction. Greenwald argues that
doubtful and false statements and a well-functioning PR-machinery played an important role in convincing the public of the necessity of the war.
News coverage and other footage paint a complex portrait of the Bush administration as it prepares for, and justifies, the military engagement. Greenwald illustrates the ulterior motives that may have provided momentum to the war effort, which officially never reached the public.
