When visiting the tomb of her recently deceased father eight- year-old Ines spots a rat scuttling back and forth on his gravestone. She brings it home with her, but the presence of the intruder is soon discovered by her mother who tries to get rid of it. Shot in stark black and white photography and precise compositions, The Rat speaks of the harshness and simplicity of death. Awarded the Gras Savoye Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Bosiljka Simonovic’s short is an eerie and bleak tale of loss, guilt and loneliness. HÉLÈNE DAHL
