Twist of Faith

An open wound becomes infected when fireman Tony Comes realizes that their new neighbour five houses down is the same catholic priest who sexually molested him 20 years ago. In one of the film’s most moving and painful scenes the family father has to explain to his daughter about their new neighbour, what he did, and why and how he hurt daddy. We follow Tony Comes as he files a lawsuit against the catholic diocese in his hometown for lying and covering up, how his past and new wounds affect his marriage and himself physically and mentally. At the same time, he struggles with his own belief in God and the church as an institution. Many of the scenes in this controversial documentary, which came about in the wake of the paedophile scandal in the Boston Catholic Church, are filmed by the subjects themselves. A technique director Kirby Dick used in the innovative Chain Camera, which allows the viewer to get extremely close to the interviewees and their thoughts, on their own terms.
