Tris stasti par ... is a Baltic co-production consisting of three stories. The first one is Der Mond - based on the theme of Carl Orff's opera. A wealthy and successful surgeon suddenly collapses at a party that he his holding. He's helped to a secluded room and there he asks his family to call for a priest. Lying on his deathbed, accompanied by the priest, he begi ns to tell his secret. The second story is Tristan och Isolde- based on the old Celtic story of the same name. In this version the action takes place in the criminal world of Riga. Last of the threesome is Aida, where the scene is an island off the Estonian coast. A rural policeman discovers a boat with fugitives at the seashore. The three tales depict a growing Baltic region. A spirit of despair and vulnerability - that either makes them grow or succumb - marks the characters. Vodka intoxication helps them escape from the present, but the nightmares once experienced can still return. The will to build is replaced in Tristan och Isolde by the desire to destroy in a world you have lost faith in. We notice the questioning of nationalism in Aida where the policeman has a patriotic belief in his young nation. He observes how the human aspects are ignored by a system that is that much bigger than each person's arbitrariness. To try to help in his isolated world a fugitive can attempt to escape from his own vulnerabil ity. In Der Mond it is a socially established man that on his death bed that is forced to confront his life-long deception and shame. The tales have a humanistic angle that deal with the right to live and survive.
