Every Morning of the World

av Alain Corneau

Every Morning of the World Monsieur de Sainte Colombe, master of the viola da gamba, shuts himself up for days and nights to practice and experiment devotedly. The suffering and the loneliness almost drive him out of his mind. Marin Marais, his talented student, comes from a poor family and is very hungry for success and fame. Marais reaches his goal and becomes a musician in the court of Louis XIV. After not having seen each other for many years, Sainte Colombe and Marais meet again. A powerful encounter between two geniuses.

Comment:
[very Morning of the World portrays 17th century France. The glamour surrounding Louts XIV is not the main object of interest; the simple person is at the center. The ideals of the Baroque, in various shapes, make up the framework of this story where music forms and governs the destinies of the characters. Comeau points at the peri~ shable element in every human being and existential questions are brought to a head.
The film portrays the fate of two individuals. One is the elder monsieur Sainte Colombe, master of the viola da gamba. He reaches an inner satisfaction through music. The other is his pupil Marais, who
wants to learn to play the instrument with the sale purpose of reaching fame and honour. Different ideals and paths of life divide the old master and the pupil. When the two men meet again after many years, they have both achieved what they wanted to at the start. But the question is if any of the two chose the right path. Sainte Colombe, like Salieri in Milos Forman's Amadeus, is put into the shade by his former disciple, who is now a court musician. Marais on his part has realized that fame has a reverse side and that that which is eternal in music can never be reached solely by playing for the rich and powerful.
Corneau has chosen a father and son to portray Marais at various ages. The father's name is Gerard Depardieu and is one of France's most loved actors. His son Guillaume was praised for his debut in this film, which has won many awards and much acclaim from the critics.
With an eye for the light and elegant aesthetic of 18th century painting rather than the swelling pomp and circumstance of the Baroque, Alain Cocteau has created a delight to the eye, the ear and the soul in this idyllic tale.
