Toto Who Lived Twice consists of three segments. Paletta is a sexually frustrated village idiot. Horses, pigs and other men are for him natural sources of arousal. When a prostitute transvestite enters the vilIage, his primitive needs are too strong for him. He is forced to break sacred taboos to get satisfaction.
Fefe is a homosexual, old and toothless, man who just lost his partner. Watching by the deathbed of his partner, he forgets h is great love when greed takes control of him. For his own profit he commits a deadly sin.
Paletta and Fefe are crucified for their misdeeds. On the hill next to them there is yet another cross, waiting for a third sinner.
The film presents a black, perverted
and grotesque universe where something unpleasant and slightly insane characterizes the people and the environments; rats, pigs, sewers, filth, toothlessness, cross eyedness and unshaven, sweaty faces fill the screen. The very special environment brings to mind, among other things C-J De Geer's classic Swedish children's program Dr. Krall, and the unending search for excitement in the grotesque also brings to mind David
Lynch's experimental film debut Eraserhead.
Beside the astonishing and taboobreaking content, the form of the film, as well, is unconventional. The story is told ina series of short well-composed scenes, the dialogue is short on words and the lighting is meticulous. The film is from this perspective, more reminiscent of a black/white photo exhibition than a featurefilm.
Beside the three short stories the film also presents a picture of something that could be Italy in its most filthy incarnation. A picture of hypocrisy, patriarchal society and the basic and primitive needs that govern its inhabitants. A vision of a decadent and disgusting society.
