The Tune

Del has to compose a tune that will make him a star. Or at least rich enough to marry the boss's secretary. The boss, Mr. Mega, gives him 47 minutes to come up with a hit. If he fails, he will lose his job. Driving to his boss under great stress, Del gets lost and ends up in Flooby Nooby, a bizarre musical world where the inhabitants are not really like others.

The American Bill Plympton is best known for the guys who fight on MTV. Yes, we meet them again in his first animated feature film The Tune. This is the story about Del who only has 47 minutes to compose a smash hit that will satisfy Mr. Mega. Since his beloved Didi is Mr. Mega's secretary, it is of vital importance that Del comes up with the hit of the century during his car ride to Mega Music. Otherwise Del will be fired.
In The Tune, Del by mistake takes a wrong turn at a huge intersection. In the city of Flooby Nooby he meets some of the city's bizarre inhabitants, who have many indescribable characteristics. The mayor gives us a guided tour among Elvis imper-
sonators, blues loving cab drivers, food which does American folk-dancing and a murderous hotel employee.
The Tune is a pleasant animated and musical journey. During the 72 minutes the film lasts we are served with most American music genres in loving pastiches and each of these has a distinct animation technique of its own, which fits the music. The music is composed by Maureen McElheron, who has also lent her voice to Didi. Plympton's and McElheron's cooperation on the short film Your Face gave them an Oscar nomination for best animated film In 1988.
As animator Plympton is a master of having things change form and content. His animation has a special Bill Plympton feel to it. His admirers have even coined a word for this; PlymptonesQue. But admiration is not always enough for a big project. Plympton financed thIS $175 000 film himself. Among other things with advertising and MTV.
