Valeria is a young woman working as a translator. She lives alone but takes an interest in her forty-something neighbour Massimo, whom she takes an almost ritualistic pleasure out of observing. When he suddenly moves to Rome, Valeria follows, She takes a job as a secretary to his mistress Flavia, and thus a delicate love triangle begins, Flavia uses Valeria as inspiration for the book she is writing about her dead husband. An inspiration that might lead to her giving up on Massimo.
Writer-director Paolo Franchi has created an intense drama about a woman who is
unable to connect with herself and therefore lives through others. This bittersweet Italian story starts out in a Rear Window-like mood and takes the viewer through its setting of old Rome stone buildings, brief meetings at cafes and night buses. Almost playing a game of cat and mouse, the characters stumble after each other to a beautiful string soundtrack.
