Behind the eye-catching title you’ll find a film that is far more thoughtful than one might expect. This three-part essay by philosopher Slavoj Zizek, is an examination of film through the lens of Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis. Zizek is a man of many words and here they all flow effortlessly across the screen. His main thesis deals with cinema as the ultimate pervert art. As he puts it: ''It doesn't give you what you desire, it tells you how to desire.” At times Zizek comes across as one of the caricatures of mad psychiatrists that have populated the movies since the age of silent cinema. Therefore it suits well when the director Fiennes chooses to integrate Zizek into the films he is analyzing, for example showing him perched on a corner of Dorothy's couch in Lynch's Blue Velvet. Whether you are well acquainted with Zizek’s writings or if this is your first exposure to them, The Pervert’s Guide To Cinema is a delight to watch. HÉLÈNE DAHL
