Henri Kremer, a Catholic priest, has been sent to the Dachau prison camp for spealcing against the Nazi regime. Together with 3000 other Catholic clergymen he suffers through days of torture and humiliation. One day, Kremer is suddenly set free and sent home to his family in Luxembourg. While he at first believes his well-connected family has arranged for his release, he soon finds out that this is not the case. A ranking member of the Gestapo - Untersturmfuehrer Gebhardt - has taken a cynical initiative and arranged a nineday ''leave'' for Kremer. During these days he
is meant to persuade the Catholic Church to create an alliance with the Nazi regime.
Director Volker Schlondorff, a master technician in the art of filmmaking, delivers a strong film about faith and courage as he recounts the tale of the young priest's moral struggles. The film is based on the true story of the Luxembourg priest Jean Bernard.
