The struggling writer Byron Tiller lives with his wife Dena in a run-down cottage in Pasadena. When his latest manuscript - about the sword Excalibur symbolising hope for a group of migrant workers - fails to excite his agent, he realises that his already poor career will never take off. But after a chance encounter with the well-tailored Luther Fox, he reluctantly agrees to take a job at a male escort service. The new beginning gives him the opportunity of meeting one of his literary idols, the novelist Tobias Alcott, through his young wife Olivia. Director Hickenlooper, whose The Low Life also depicted the battles of ''making it'' in Los Angeles, uses an ensemble of disparate actors in portraying an artificial world. There's the dynamic Rolling Stone Mick Jagger alongside suave Anjelica Huston. There's also worn down James Coburn in a stylish Hemingway performance. And then there's Michael Des Barres as one of the veteran escorts stealing the punchlines. , A fable of innocence and naivety in the aspiring dreams of novelists, The man from Elysian Fields juxtaposes culture with capital and asks the question of it's worth.
