LEGEND OF FONG SAI YUK II, THE

LEGEND OF FONG SAI YUK II, THE

av Cory Yuen

The Cantonese hero Fong Sai Yuk becomes involved in the secret brotherhood ''The Red Flower'', who are trying to overthrow the Manchurian emperor and re-establish the Ming dynasty. The social upheaval is combined with Sai Yuk's personal moral conflicts about how to conform to the rigid regime of the brotherhood and on top of that sort out his difficult love life, saddled with two presumptive wifes.

Apart from the typical ingredients of a Hong Kong movie, there are also classical themes with mixed-up identities and the secret origin of a foundling. Is the leader of the brotherhood really the brother of the hateful emperor. . .

One of the more sympathetic aspects of kung fu films is the fact that the hero is prequently assisted by women who are very well acquainted with the noble martial arts. In The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk II the hero's mother is his supporter and as such she frequently has to rescue her son and thus gets the opportunity to teach him her special blows and kicks. However, her strong temperament and enthusiasm for combat puts the son in difficult situations with comical undertones, but on the whole the director spare us the cross-eyed look and knock-about humour which remains staple commodities in this genre.
