The Last Days of Disco

Early eighties. I n Hampshire College two young female students, who late one night decide to sneak out to a disco. There they meet a group of male former students. They also like to dance. Bounds are formed. The Last days of Disco chronicles the pilgrimage, that many of the young people of those days made when they left college. They may have been academically smart, but for that fact no worse than anybody else at taking what life had to offer.
One is not too spoiled with films by Whit Stillman. Ever since his very convincing debut with Metropolitan, I have been looking forward to new films by Stillman. This is his third film. A romantic comedy, where everything takes place during the most hectic and most unbelievable period of disco fever; a lot of good music, that is. But this is no ordinary comedy. It belongs to the category of intellectual comedies,
a genre that is not too usual.
After the critically acclaimed Metropolitan (1990), Stillman made the warm Barcelona (1994). The Last Days of Disco is the third movie in a trilogy that puts social belonging in focus. Words can have different connotations, in this case the cultural and social context has great
importance. In the first film of the trilogyMetropolitan - the language created a wall; in this the final film of the trilogy, the focus is on how to get over that kind
if wall. In The Last Days of Disco the music works as something that breaks the class borders - a potential solution to the problem.
Stillman never over-does it, quiet and tactful as he is. And it is the unobtrusiveness that becomes the sign of this filmdespite the music. Typical of Whit Stillman.
