Luane Devore's evil gossip weaves it web around the small, dilapidated bathing resort in New England. Old grudges and long-forgotten secrets are revived. Everyone in the village seems to have a motive for murdering the malignant Luane... Based on Jim Thompson's searing best seller.
Comment:
American neo-noir. Heroin, awkward striptease, drink and depraved passion. Unhealthy pleasures in a wretched American Endsville. Everything is off-season and the haggard tedium is all that really lasts. A trouble-making, malingering old maid lies abed, plying the local hoi polloi with malicious gossip and cunning intrigue. She is a venomous spider, enveloping the town in a sticky web of telephone lines.
The lines are buzzing with tittle tattle, and before long everybody knows everything about everyone else. Soon a number of murders are planned. For, in the absence of anything more amusing to do, one can always kill somebody.
Existential violence, in other words.
The Kill Off is a brutally unglamorous Dallas wrapped up in Evan Lurie's suggestive accordion music, which turns into piano music, which turns into clarinet and saxophone music...
