The Intruder

The Intruder

av Roger Corman

A film brimming with good intentions and a valid social commentary, The Intruder was a timely tale of social injustice that was praised by the critics but ignored by the public, which considered its subject matter too controversial for the early 60's.
Bosley Crowther of The New York Times wrote, ''this must be said for The Intruder: it does break fertile ground in the area of integration that has not yet opened on the screen''. The New York Herald Tribune wrote ''This motion picture is a major credit to the entire American film industry''. The Intruder was invited to the 1960 Venice Film Festival.

Comments:
We shot a white supremacy parade through the black part of the town and a cross-burning scene at night and while this was being shot someone watching in the crowd was knifed. The whites thought we were with the blacks and they hated us. It was murder. Those three weks seemed interminable. Despite that setting, Roger was as dedicated as any director I have ever seen, particularly when he was threatened outside the schoolyard b the officer. He got that shot under duress, though he could really have been hurt.
