The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things

Based on]T LeRoy's seIni-autobiographical book with the same title, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things is a chilling drama set in the back alleys of America. Seven-year-old Jeremiah is taken away from his secure upbringing with foster parents, to live with his young biological mother Sarah. Struggling with various types of addiction and serious self-esteem issues, Sarah is a far from fit mother. From here, Jeremiah embarks on a journey through various hellish experiences with constant abuse, both physical and psychological.
Asia Argento's Sarah (a spitting image of Courtney Love) thrusts on like a runaway
train, and child actors Jimmy Bennett as well as the Sprouse twins, who play Jeremiah at different stages of the film, all have that painstakingly absolute presence, giving the film an almost unbearable autheneity. Borrowing elements from father Daria's horror movie aesthetics such as the use of inventive, swirling camera movements, gritty, bleak colours and rhythmic, audio-synched editing, Asia Argento's dark interpretation of JT LeRoy's story is as intimidating as any of her father's films. A bitter slice of Americana that may turn the odd stomach.
