In the year 1938, a ball of fire crashes into the Chilean mountains. Many questions arise surrounding the origins of the object and the truth has remained a mystery, until now. When a film-team start digging in the Russian Film Archives, they discover evidence of a top-secret operation embarked on by the Soviet Union. Twenty-three years prior to Yuri Gagarin’s famed trip into space the Soviets had selected and rigorously trained a team of to-be cosmonauts with the only mission to travel to the moon and back. Yet the mission failed miserably, and all evidence was to be destroyed. The film team searches far and wide for people involved in the mission who are still alive today, and conduct in-depth interviews with them. The story that arises from broken memories is a truly astounding one, which changes world history. First on The Moon is an excellent mockumentary by Russian director and producer Alexei Fedorchenko. Genuine footage from the Soviet Union is intertwined with newly shot film in black and white, made to look ancient complete with scratches and surface noise, the end result convincing enough to fool any historian.
