Director Thom Fitzgerald is back, after such features as The Hanging Garden and Beefcake. The Event is a black comedy-drama, set against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic. A young man, Matt (Don McKellar), terminally ill with AIDS, is found dead under unclear circumstances. A young investigator with the District Attorney's office, Nick (Parker Posey) is assigned to investigate this and other seemingly assisted suicide deaths. She interviews family and friends to get to the bottom of the issue. Out of these encounters, a vivid portrait emerges of a young man, his friends and family, caught at the brink of death and loss.
The event ofthe title forms the centre piece of the film.
Matt, together with his friends, decide to throw a party celebrating his passing. Caught on camera for a cable access channel, it is rendered visible, in this form, both to Nick, the main protagonist, and to the viewers - us. Death,
in this form, becomes something of a feast, amn occasion
of celebration as well as oftrauma and sadness. The film probes a host of different attitudes towards the fact of death, ranging from whimsical to the sad to the outraged, and this is where the film's humanism comes through.
