The Education of Gore Vidal

The Education of Gore Vidal

av Deborah Dickson

Gore Vidal is one of the busiest and most extraordinary intellectuals in literature today. He is a renowned American author who has written everything from novels to essays on history and plays. Examples of his works are the best selling American Chronicle series and The Best Man, his most successful play.
One of the main themes in his authorship is the criticism of his native country (for the last thirty years, he has spent most of his time in a villa in Italy). In his latest book, The Golden Age, he gives his view on Roosevelt and the United States’ involvement in World War II. Vidal has also written some controversial remarks on the incidents of September 11th, that several American magazines judged too daring to print.
In this film he is portrayed by independent filmmaker Deborah Dickinson, best known for the Academy Award nominated documentary Frances Steloff: Memories of a Bookseller. Interesting and enlightening interviews are mixed with readings of the author’s own work, performed by well known actors such as Paul Newman, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, and we also get to follow Vidal on a publicity tour in the United States, and on the 40th anniversary of The Best Man.
