The Dying Gaul is the title of screenwriter Craig Lucas directorial debut. It is also the title of a script featured in the film, inspired by a statue in Rome of a wounded warrior lying on the ground, waiting for his death. This film is very much about wounds. Robert, played excellently by Peter Saarsgard, is a homosexual screenwriter who’s just lost his lover to AIDS. He is invited to a film producer to talk about his latest script “The Dying Gaul”. The producer shows great interest in everything about Robert, including his sexuality. As Robert starts socialising with the producer, he also meets the producer’s wife and they immediately connect. Soon, Robert is involved in a love triangle of jealousy, sex, revenge, disappointment and sorrow. One thing leads to the other and revenge seldom leads to something positive. (Except of course the instant feeling of victory.)This is a story about strong feelings and has all the ingredients of a Greek tragedy. It is based on Lucas play with the same name and the movie version is told in a very quiet way. The acting is insinuating and perfectly performed by the three main characters. The Dying Gaul was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival.ERICA JENSEN
