The Deep End

The Deep End

av Scott McGehee, David Siegel

A woman, Margaret, enters a glittering nightclub, her prescence obviously misplaced among the gorgeous, fit men. She is there to meet the lover of her teenage son, and to convince him to stay out of her son's life. Early next day, she discovers the lover dead in the water of Lake Tahoe. Not knowing anything of what has happened but fearing her son's involvment, Margaret takes the decision to get rid of the body. Hence begins to form a spiral of suspicion, quilt, love, loyalty and desperation.

The Deep End is a film with Hitchcockian traits that pictures a woman with need of complete control, and what happens to her when the world around her starts to crumble. The slightly obtrusive feeling in the film is in complete harmony with Margaret's state of mind as she starts to crack. The surroundings of Lake Tahoe and the constant prescence of calming water could easily get you fooled, but Margaret's universe may well be just as corrupted as the one she wants to save her son from. The film was a hit at the Sundance, and collected a well deserved Cinematography Award.
