Catherine is a straightforward eleven year old girl who don't think much about going to school. She prefers to play on the wild Yorkshire moors near her family farm. Her parents don't pay much attention to her, as they are preoccupied by her very sick little brother Matthew. One day Catherine makes friends with Uma, a new girl in the neighbourhood. While they are playing on the moor they have a mysterious experience that convinces Catherine that she has the power to save her brothers life. In the beginning her parents are angry that she's giving Matthew false hopes, but a chain of events makes the parents as well as everyone else in the village to believe in the power of the girls.
