The Circus is is one of Charlie Chaplin's less known films,
as it came to stand in the shadows of the earlier The Gold Rush and the latter City Lights and Modern Times. Still it was made in his heyday, and would earn him an honorary Oscar for versatility and genius in acting, writing, directing and producing. Charlie plays the tramp being chased by the police at a circus, mistaken for a pickpocket. His hilarious acrobatics while trying to elude the cops impresses the ringmaster, who hires him. But as he cannot be deliberately funny, the tramp gets to work as a janitor without real-
izing that he will always be flung onto the stage when it's showtime.
The Circus has all the typical Chaplin characteristics - his circuitous movements, his romantic interest in a pretty girl (this time the circus manager's abused daughter) and his battle with a rival of greater social stature. Challenging the high wire with monkeys climbing on top of him, as well as the memorable ending, epitomize Chaplin’s technique in his last entirely slapstick thematic film. His later films would more or less contain some sort of social commentary, but The Circus is completely a laughing matter.
